About LCFEF Summer School

Mission:

The primary purpose of the LCFEF Summer School is to provide a high quality, rigorous 9-12 selection of course offerings to allow students to both improve their academic standing (remedial students) as well as allowing other students to accelerate and enhance their academic program. A secondary purpose of the LCFEF Summer School is to contribute any net income from the summer school program to the La Cañada Unified School District to help further the educational programs for all La Cañada students.

Overview/Course Offerings:

The La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation (LCFEF) offers a comprehensive, six-week summer school program in support of the La Cañada Unified School District, the community of La Cañada Flintridge and students in the surrounding communities. LCFEF Summer School will be offered at La Cañada High School (LCHS) to students entering 9th – 12th grade from June 19th – July 27th, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. (with the exception of July 4th). Enrollment is open to LCUSD and non-LCUSD high school students. Guaranteed course offerings include:

English 1-4; Spanish 1-3; Algebra IB; Geometry; Algebra II; World History; U.S. History; Govt./Econ.; Biology; Chemistry; Physics; P.E. & Health

Additional courses are under consideration. Check Registration Information in February for an updated course list and pre-requisites. These core academic offerings are designed to allow students to “work ahead”, freeing up their school-year schedule so that they can pursue electives or specialty classes. Students also are able to enroll in classes in order to remediate a D or an F grade. Courses offered are designed to meet the A-G college admission requirements as well as meet or exceed the academic rigor of California State, La Cañada Unified and University of California standards. Coursework fully prepares students to succeed in sequential classes in same and related subjects offered during the following school year.

Course Pace/Content/Approach:

An LCFEF Summer School course is comprised of one full year of academic learning presented over a six-week, four-hour per day session. Classes move quickly and students are generally best served by taking classes in subject areas where they are academically strong. Students who are remediating a class will have an advantage in that they will be “reviewing” material already learned. Because of the intensive nature of the coursework, students must expect to spend considerable out-of-class time doing homework in order to succeed. For that reason, no more than three (3) absences will be allowed; otherwise credit for a full-year class will not be earned. More detail about absences is provided in our policies under Attendance.

LCFEF Summer School curriculum is based upon LCHS regular school year programs, uses the same textbook and materials, and utilizes a similar instructional time and homework load as LCHS as well. The intimate size of the program permits daily observation of each and every class by summer school principals as well as regular feedback from principals to teachers and from teachers to parents.

Other Resources:

LCFEF Summer School students have access to the LCHS Information Resource Center, computer facilities and science labs.

Daily food service is arranged through local restaurants and caterers at a reasonable cost to students.

Admission/Registration:

Admission to summer school is by application, and enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes with multiple sections offered are assigned on a random basis. There is NO MINIMUM ENROLLMENT, but classes (except P.E.) will have a maximum of 20-25 students. The average class size in 2011 was 17.
